The air comes off the mountain cold enough to taste. Somebody's already making coffee. Today is the hike everyone has been counting down to, and nobody has to be talked into getting up for it.
You're coming for the park, or the powder, or the stretch of river where the fish are. You're coming because it's been too long since the last time everyone was together. That's the trip. That's what you'll be describing on the phone afterwards.
And then the day ends and you walk back into a house that's quietly better than the one you left. Deep chairs, a fire that takes one match, a kitchen big enough for everyone to stand in at once. Let us handle the hospitality. Montana will do the rest.
People plan their entire year around this.
Turquoise lakes you can see the bottom of. A road cut straight across the face of the mountains. Trails a four-year-old can manage and trails that will humble you. Whatever your group can actually agree on, the park has a version of it, and we know which one to send you to on the morning the weather turns.
A ski mountain rises straight out of the town, there's a lake at the top of the main street, and the rivers run in every direction. There isn't an off season here, just a different one. Let us know when you're coming and we'll line up the days.
Three thousand acres above town, night skiing on three lifts, a snowcat operation for the day you want the whole face to yourselves, and dog sleds running out of Olney.

A couple, a family, three families who have been threatening to do this for years. They're not interchangeable, and neither are the houses.
For the reunion. Several families under one roof without anybody feeling stacked on top of each other. Two hot tubs, a theater, an arcade, and one table long enough for all of you.
For the two of you, chasing snow. Walk to Chair 1 and Chair 2 in ski boots, come back to a fire and a hot tub, and never move the car all week.
For the ones who want to be further out. A cabin on the water with a barrel sauna, a lit geodome and kayaks on the lawn. Town when you want it, nobody when you don't.
For the family whose whole trip is the park. The closest of the four to the gate, so you're at the trailhead while everybody else is still driving.
